ORC-ID

Open Researcher and Contributor ID

“Scientific outputs are the products in which the researchers present their studies. They have a great effect on the academicians’ job finding process and also earning a title. In order to have information about the works of a scientist, the publications he/she has done are examined. The ORC-ID system has been established to make this examination process easier. In this system, in which a personal academic ID is created for each researcher, the registrations are made by personal applications.” (Cetinkaya, 2019)

Within the context of the studies conducted in cooperation of TUBITAK ULAKBIM and YOK, using the ORC-ID information for the Researcher ID Numbers and having an ORC-ID for the authors of the journals that are in the TR index or have applied to be in the index and also indicating it on the first page of the articles (Article 14) are among the criteria.

WHAT IS ORC-ID?

  • ORCID is a wide platform that enables the researchers to share their knowledge around the world.
  • The organisations like Crossref, Elsevier, Thomson Reuters are among the founding partners.
  • “The aim is to gather all the research outputs of a researcher under a single account by using one digital identity.” (libguides.iyte).
  • “It was born to create a globally explicit descriptive register for the researchers.” (Haak et al., 2012).
  • “It is intended to provide a unique and permanent identifier to accommodate information sharing about people, organisations, sources, and research products, and also to provide related web services.” (Haak, Meadows and Brown, 2018).
  • It is an organisation funded by non-profit donors and sponsors.
  • At present, 7,302,823 (October 17, 2019) researchers have registered to the ORCID system. In this system, a 16-digit personal ID is used to clearly distinguish each researcher from one another and to establish a reliable connection.
  • It has been associated with over 500 systems worldwide.

WHY SHOULD HAVE AN ORC-ID?

To be able to obtain information about an academician’s works, it is necessary to look at his/her publications and while this is done, there may be various problems.

  • Name similarities,
  • Turkish/different characters in the name and surname,
  • Institution or country amendments,
  • Surname changes of women writers,
  • Differences in name initials
  • Publication of the research outputs in various places and in different formats.

Due to the problems above, there happen difficulties in accessing to all publications of an academician collectively. Healthy results cannot be obtained in academic analyses which will be done about the author or his/her affiliated institution. The ORCID identity securely records your studies, trainings, awards, projects, and memberships.

  • The only solution to overcome these problems is to have a Digital Academic Identity Number.
  • Stating an ORC-ID number in personal CVs provides prestige and at the same time means trademark registration of the researcher. The researcher can also be reached with ORC-ID QR CODE.
  • You can integrate your ORC-ID into various databases (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, CrossRef, Dergipark, DataCite, OpenAire, Open Science Framework (OSF), Crossref etc.)
  • By integrating with the most frequently used academic platforms, ORC-ID resolves the difficulty of keeping multiple profiles updated.
  • After your work is published in the places integrated with ORC-ID, it will be automatically integrated into your ORC-ID record and all databased connected to it.
  • With ORC-ID, you can login to any academic platform where you see theemblem.
  • When ranking the universities around the world, Elsevier Scopus and Thomson Reuters Web of Science and Researcher ID are mostly used. To combine these two with ORC-ID and to centralize will increase the academic visibility of both the academician and his/her affiliated institution.
  • It is always with you throughout your career. ORC-ID is with you in your status, position, institution and country changes.
  • ORCID provides the creation of Digital Academic Identity Card service free of charge. https://orcid.org/register
