The symposium titled “Eating Disorders / Mind, Emotion and Nutrition,” organized by the Nutrition and Dietetics Club of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University, was held at the Historic Building Nizamülmülk Conference Hall. In the program, which aimed to raise awareness among students and convey basic information about treatment processes related to eating disorders, experts in their fields made important evaluations.
Specialist Psychologist Senem Eke Yıldız stated that eating disorders are not sufficiently recognized in Türkiye and drew attention to the fact that these issues, which progress unnoticed, can lead to serious consequences. Dietitian Buket Sözan emphasized that the concept of diet is misunderstood in society, stating that diet actually means meeting an individual’s needs in a balanced and adequate way. Psychiatrist Ahmet Öztürk highlighted the importance of the conceptual distinction by drawing attention to the differences between eating disorders and nutritional disorders. Dietitian Ece Geçili provided participants with comprehensive information about types of eating disorders, treatment methods, and process management.
During the symposium, students were offered recommendations regarding treatment stages, and it was emphasized that eating disorders are illnesses with a high risk of recurrence, highlighting the need to act carefully and consciously throughout these processes.
