The "1st National CBRN Congress" themed "Preparedness for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Threats," organized by İZÜ Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, was held. The congress focused on discussing measures to be taken against CBRN threats in the field of healthcare.
The "1st National CBRN Congress," organized by the Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, was held at the Abdullah Tivnikli Conference Hall. The program, themed "Preparedness for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Threats," was attended by Prof. Dr. Ayşe Nefise Bahçecik, Dean of İZÜ Faculty of Health Sciences; Prof. Dr. Levent Kenar, President of the CBRN Defense Policy Development Association; and numerous academics and students.
In her opening speech, Dean Bahçecik emphasized that the purpose of the event was to share knowledge and experiences about CBRN threats. She stated, "CBRN threats involve complex challenges, and overcoming these risks requires collaboration among many actors from the public sector, private sector, academia, and civil society."
Prof. Dr. Levent Kenar, President of the CBRN Defense Policy Development Association, highlighted that CBRN weapons have serious consequences not only in military contexts but also in civilian life. He stressed the critical importance of healthcare workers being prepared for these threats and noted that the congress would contribute to the development of effective strategies.
CBRN ADDRESSED FROM A MULTIDIMENSIONAL PERSPECTIVE
In the first session of the program, experts delivered presentations on CBRN threats. Prof. Dr. Levent Kenar provided insights into chemical threats, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gürsel Karahan discussed radiological incidents, and Prof. Dr. Mustafa Nizamettin Erduran covered nuclear threats. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mesut Ortatatlı delivered a comprehensive presentation on bioterrorism.
The second session focused on preparedness for CBRN threats. Samet Kılıç, Istanbul UMKE Coordinator from the Ministry of Health, explained medical rescue processes. Seval Dedoğlu from Istanbul AFAD Unit Directorate provided information about Turkey's disaster response plan. Additionally, Sefer Küçük, Istanbul AFAD CBRN Team Commander, conducted a demonstration on response processes for CBRN incidents.
The final session addressed CBRN management in emergency healthcare services. Dr. Malik Türkay Esin, Deputy Chief Physician of Taksim Training and Research Hospital, shared insights on the impact on emergency healthcare services. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mesut Ortatatlı provided information on a hospital decontamination unit as an example, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aynur Şahin discussed clinical syndromes observed in toxic terrorism and emergency management strategies.
