Is Artificial Intelligence a Friend or Foe?

The opening lecture for the 2024-2025 academic year at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University’s Faculty of Business and Management Sciences was delivered by Prof. Dr. Veysel Bozkurt, a faculty member from Istanbul University. Titled "The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education: Opportunities and Risks," the program was held in the ISEFAM Abdullah Tivnikli Hall. The event thoroughly examined the role of artificial intelligence in education, the opportunities it presents, and the risks it entails.
Prof. Yumuşak: Unlimited Use Poses Risks
In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Güran Yumuşak, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences at İZÜ, evaluated the impacts of artificial intelligence on our lives. He stated, "The risks brought about by unlimited usage must be taken seriously." Prof. Yumuşak emphasized, "Artificial intelligence is a new field. Alongside its advantages, it carries significant risks. During the pandemic, we focused heavily on online classes; however, now we need to discuss the consequences of that situation. Considering the cellphone bans in schools in Germany, we must prevent the negative effects of technology on young people."
Prof. Bozkurt: Could Artificial Intelligence Bring About the End of Humanity?
In the opening lecture, Prof. Dr. Veysel Bozkurt, a faculty member at Istanbul University, discussed the impacts of artificial intelligence on our lives and its potential for the future. He noted that AI is one of the most variable and transformative concepts, highlighting that the number of people actively using AI technology is increasing daily. Prof. Bozkurt also mentioned that there is a significant population that perceives AI as a threat, stating, "In a study conducted with a group of 1,500 people, 20% expressed that AI would bring about the end of humanity. According to analyses, AI is seen as a threat by many. In-depth analyses of this technology are being conducted. AI is with us at every stage of our lives. Whether you use it or not, AI is a part of your life. There is a prevailing perception that AI will increase unemployment. So, can AI really bring about the end of humanity? I wish we could answer that question. How AI will impact our lives depends on technology companies. We need to produce technology that belongs to us. This is where our fundamental problem lies. AI is something neither you nor I can afford to give up."
