In the opening speeches of the program, İZÜ Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan İçener emphasized the importance of the relationship between religion and politics in the social sphere, stating, "It is an honor for us to have Prof. Dr. İsmail Kara as part of our Political Science Club's first program." İZÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar highlighted the role of religion in social values. He stated, "We must stay away from prejudices. It is clear that religion is an indispensable element. It is impossible for social values to disregard religion. Polarization has led us to become a society that engages in unproductive debates. We should evaluate the relationship between religion and politics primarily from an objective perspective."
"The contrast between religion and politics is a result of modernism."
Prof. Dr. İsmail Kara from the Islamic Studies Department at İZÜ explained how the distinction between religion and politics has developed in a historical context during his seminar titled "Modern Images of the Relationship Between Religion and Politics." He stated, "The relationship between religion and politics is a contemporary issue. Before the modern era, it was quite difficult to understand the separation of religion and politics. The increasing distance between them has led to a contrast and rupture, which is a result of modernism. To understand modernization, three key points should be addressed: First, we must discuss modern science and philosophy, which are important elements of Enlightenment philosophy. Second, the processes of secularism and secularization are crucial. Third, capitalism forms the underlying thought structure of our daily lifestyle. In this context, capitalism has nothing to do with the appearance of freedom." After the seminar, participants had the opportunity to deeply discuss the effects of modernization on the relationship between religion and politics.
