The program “Architecture and Context,” organized by the IZU Department of Architecture, was held at the Abdullah Tivnikli Conference Hall. The event featured Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rıfat Gökhan Koçyiğit, faculty member at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Architecture, and was attended by IZU architecture faculty members and students.
Koçyiğit analyzed context, one of the fundamental concepts of architectural theory, within a broad framework ranging from the philosophy of language to epistemology, and from urban planning to design processes, addressing both its semantic and pragmatic dimensions. “Reality cannot always be grasped directly; it reveals different faces depending on circumstances. Therefore, an architect must learn to doubt, question, and interpret context from multiple perspectives,” he said. Koçyiğit also emphasized that the physical context consisting of elements such as solid void balance, texture, scale, and urban organization serves as a key determinant of any architectural project.
