Innovations and Applications of Artificial Intelligence Discussed at IZU

19.11.2025

At a program organized by the Department of Computer Engineering, innovations and application examples of artificial intelligence ranging from healthcare to space technologies, architecture to vehicle safety were thoroughly explored.

The “Artificial Intelligence and Social Transformation” seminar, hosted by the Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Department of Computer Engineering, took place in the Historical Building’s Museum Hall. In the program, where IZU faculty members Prof. Dr. Tarık Özkul and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cevat Reşit served as speakers, students from Türkiye, Morocco, and France presented project examples demonstrating the use of artificial intelligence.

The first talk of the program was delivered by IZU Computer Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Tarık Özkul. Stating that he works with artificial intelligence both as an academic and as a technology company executive, Özkul shared with students the innovations introduced by the five AI technologies implemented by his company. The AI applications developed by Özkul’s company operating at IZU Zaim Technopark, and honored with numerous international awards, are used in the fields of healthcare, wind turbines, satellite technologies, structural health monitoring, and solar energy. Highlighting that “Artificial intelligence offers effective, fast, and practical possibilities for problem detection and solution development,” Özkul noted that they achieved 97% success in AI-supported vertigo treatment.

Using Artificial Intelligence to Detect Conflicts of Interest
In his talk titled “A Blockchain and NLP-Based Multi-Layered Framework for Conflict of Interest Detection in Peer Review,” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cevat Reşit presented their systematic literature review on technological and procedural approaches to conflict of interest management.

Reşit emphasized that conflict of interest remains a persistent issue in scientific peer review, as undisclosed or hidden relationships can undermine fairness. He provided the following information about the blockchain-based framework they propose:

“Our systematic literature review reveals advances in metadata-based conflict of interest detection, reviewer assignment optimization, and ethical frameworks, while also highlighting persistent gaps such as limited transparency in context-aware relationship identification, multi-dependency tracking, and reporting mechanisms. The framework we propose addresses these limitations and offers a multilayered conflict of interest detection model.”

The full-day program concluded with presentations delivered by participants including guest students from Morocco and France on the following topics:
“Peer Review Systems and Conflicts of Interest”
“From Draft to Publication: A Practical Guide for Successful Research Publishing”
“Modeling and Simulation of the Respiratory System During Pressure-Controlled Mechanical Ventilation”
“Optimizing Energy Efficiency in Buildings Using AI-Supported Digital Twins”
